Henrik Stenson withdraws from The Barclays, citing a knee injury

Henrik Stenson withdrew from The Barclays 2016 on Thursday, citing a knee injury after shooting an opening 3-over 74 that would have left him tied for 86th place in the FedEx Cup playoff opener.

“Regrettably, I need to withdraw this week to allow time for an MRI and see what the next step is,” said Stenson. “My right knee, which required surgery in December 2015, has flared up again.”

At the end of last season, Stenson had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in the right knee.

This is the second time this season that Stenson has withdrawn from a tournament citing knee discomfort. Stenson withdrew from the U.S. Open in the second round, heading toward a missed cut amid a long few days to get to through the first 36 holes at Oakmont Country Club.

Stenson, who came into The Barclays ranked 14th in FedEx Cup points, will easily make the field of 100 for next week's Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston.
