Defending Players champion Rickie Fowler and Rory McIlroy are among players wearing some special kicks at TPC Sawgrass this week.
Rickie Fowler is wearing a two-tone look of his Puma Golf Titantour Ingite shoes, dubbed the Tricks model. The black shoes have electric yellow and pink tones, and they're designed to make a statement about having more fun on the golf course. The predominant colorway is different on each foot by design. The idea was inspired by Cameroonian soccer star Rigobert Song, who wore a red Puma King boot on his left foot and a yellow on his right foot during the 1998 World Cup.
Puma has made 1,000 pairs of the shoes, which retail for $230.
Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy is starting to look a little more like Fowler from head-to-toe. The four-time major winner sported a bright orange shirt for Thursday's opening round, as well Nike Golf jogger pants and -- yes -- high tops. However, McIlroy's shoes are inspired by one of Nike's many legendary shoes.
The Nike Air Zoom 90 IT golf shoe was inspired by the Air Max 90, one of McIlroy’s favorite off-course shoes. Nike converted the Air Max 90 into a golf shoe, giving it a responsive Zoom Air sole in the forefoot for comfort. The rubber outsole has traction elements to offer grip on the course, but not so nubby that a player couldn't wear them off the course.
The Air Zoom 90 IT will be available for in a black/white style on May 13 and in a white/black color combination on June 1 for $175 at nike.com.
