The USGA has announced the 2016 U.S. Open sectional qualifying sites, with a dozen sites that will determine a large portion of the field bound for Oakmont Country Club from June 16-19.
Two international qualifiers will be played, one in Japan on May 23 and the other in England on May 30. The 10 U.S.-based sectional qualifiers will be played June 6. The format for each of the events is 36 holes of stroke play, with the allocation of spots available to the Open determined beforehand by the USGA based on the number of players and quality of the field. Three sites -- in San Francisco, Columbus (Ohio) and Summit, N.J. -- will be played on two different courses.
Six players have ever emerged from sectional qualifying to win the U.S. Open, with Steve Jones (1996), Michael Campbell (2005) and Lucas Glover (2009) being three in recent memory.
