If you saw Tom Watson play in the PGA Tour Champions opener last weekend at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai, then you were probably wondering why the five-time Open champion was playing with what looked like a miniature soccer ball.
Well, your eyes weren't deceiving you. Tom Watson is playing what looks like a soccer ball, and it's on purpose.
In the offseason, Watson switched to Callaway Golf from being an Adams Golf staffer, and, as part of the change, he put in play the Callaway Truvis Chrome Soft ball. The Truvis pattern -- that's the old soccer ball pattern -- creates a red-white contrast that improves the player's view of the ball for improved focus.
The Chrome Soft ball is otherwise the same, with a soft core to offer better feel and spin without sacrificing distance.
