Hunter Mahan was the last of a dying breed. The last of the Mah-icans, if you will. Since the FedEx Cup concept began in 2007, Mahan had been the only player to compete in every playoff event and was also the only player to make it to the Tour Championship each year.
That streak is no longer.
Mahan finished the BMW Championship on Sunday with a 1-over 72 to finish well outside the minimum top-14 finish he needed to have a chance at advancing to the Tour Championship for the ninth consecutive year. Coming into the third leg of this season's playoffs at No. 52 in the standings, Mahan had to improve inside the top 30 in FedEx Cup points to qualify for the playoff finale at East Lake in Atlanta next week.
The Oklahoma State product played in the first 35 FedEx Cup playoff events. However, he just won once, last year at The Barclays, in the playoffs. Outside of the 30-player Tour Championship, Hunter had 10 top-25 finishes in 27 starts.
Heading into The Barclays, Mahan expressed how much the distinction meant to him.
"I take great pride in that and I think it's a great accomplishment because it's through a long period of time," Mahan said Tuesday. "It's not like a six-month stretch of great golf. You know, it's eight years of great golf."
