Haeran Ryu shot 11-under 60 on Saturday in the third round of the Amundi Evian Championship in France, shooting the lowest-ever single round in a major championship.
And Ryu, who just won her first major in the last LPGA event, the KPMG Women's PGA Championship, didn't even know she had a putt for 59.
Ryu, who had made eight birdies and a hole-out eagle on the par-4 sixth hole, had reached the par-5 finishing hole at Evian Resort Golf Club in two and had a 25-footer to reach the magical 59 number. Her eagle bid was a slow putt, and she came up about a half-foot short of making it. She tapped in for birdie to shoot 60, not knowing what she had done. It only occurred to her once she got out her scorecard to add up everything.
The South Korean was seen adding up the dots on her card, and she realized she had 11 on the card. She then turned to her caddie and explained what she had discovered: That her last putt was for a sub-60 round, and she came up just short. Her caddie gave her a humble acknowledgement, although he could well have known the whole time.
No player, male or female, has ever shot that low in a major championship. The lowest round in a men's major championship is 62, which has been shot six times, including five times since 2023.
Evian Resort Golf Club, however, has given up the four lowest scores ever shot in a sanctioned major championship for men or women, at or below the senior-age level. The previous tournament record was 61, shot three times, each in Rounds 1, 2 and 4.
Ryu's bogey-free round on moving day rocketed her into the lead at 19-under 194, marking the lowest ever 54-hole score in an LPGA major championship. She is three shots ahead of Akie Iwai of Japan heading into the final round.
