Bubba Watson will be taking the rest of 2017 off, just as soon as his FedEx Cup playoff run comes to a close.
Watson, who came into the playoffs at No. 113 in regular season FedEx Cup points, is tied for fifth place through 36 holes at The Northern Trust. Were he to hang on to that position in the first leg of the playoffs, Watson would move inside the top 50 in FedEx Cup standings, getting him comfortably into at least the second and third legs of the four-event series.
However, no matter when his run comes to its conclusion, Watson will then immediately go on an extended break from golf until early 2018.
“We love to compete, and so to take four-and-a-half months off — hopefully it’s a little less than that if I make it all the way to Atlanta. But to take that much time off, you have to be away from the game, and it’s hard to do because we love to compete and we love to beat each other. We love the competition,” Watson said.
So, when would we see Watson start his 2018, barring a win in the playoffs?
He said, “I’m going to hopefully have some good rest and be ready to play good in Phoenix (at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.”
