Ben Crane was accused on Wednesday by PGA Tour player Tom Gillis of owing $6,000 (revealed later that it is to Daniel Berger) in an unpaid debt related to a putting contest. Gillis made the accusation on Twitter without warning.

After the initial tweet, Gillis clarified some things.
- Gillis wasn't the person to which Crane owes money. Rather, it's since come out that the player owed is Daniel Berger.
- The putting contest in question happened at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, unfolding over 45 minutes.
- Gillis claims Crane, who hasn't responded to the tweets, wants a chance to pull even on the debt with a game of ping-pong.
Later in the afternoon, Gillis said the tweets must have made their way to Crane, who will reportedly pay up during the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
