Bridgestone Golf introduces golf ball-fitting and lite launch monitor app

For years, Bridgestone Golf has pushed personal ball fitting for golfers, slotting players into golf balls based on their swing speeds and spin needs. Hundreds of thousands of golfers have gone through the fitting process, including using a series of online tools the company made available to streamline fitting for golfers who can't or won't stop at a retailer to get fit in person.

Now Bridgestone Golf has come out with a ball-fitting app for Apple devices (with an Android version coming soon) that will help golfers get into the right Bridgestone ball for them. The app, called BFit, is a good marketing tool, yes, but it's also billed as having characteristics of a launch monitor.

Here's how it works:

Golfers can video their swing using the app, and the app returns with swing speed, ball speed, launch angle, carry distance and total distance for that particular swing. With that data, the BFit app can recommend a Bridgestone ball that will fit your game.

You'll have to calibrate the app and your camera to work together to capture data correctly and consistently, but that's a small price to pay for a free app. Early recommendations from App Store users suggest performing the fitting outside.

The app is now available in the iTunes App Store.
