The first major golf tournament of the year has arrived. Masters Week is here. So what do you want to know about this year’s event? Who are the favorites? Will the azaleas be in bloom? What’s the best spot on the Augusta National Golf Club layout to get closest to the competitors?

In Episode 98 of the “Talking GolfGetaways” podcast, Scott Michaux of the Augusta Chronicle joins hosts Mitch Laurance and Darin Bunch for a wide-ranging, all-things-Masters conversation that not only highlights this year’s tournament but also reveals the backstory of how the local newspaper churns out pages and pages of some of the most interesting content you’ll find leading up to golf’s signature event — plus daily coverage (both via newspaper and social media) of the actual event itself.

Scott recaps his personal road to Augusta (which includes a stop in Greensboro, North Carolina, and his brush-with-greatness golf memories of the days when Mitch was a celebrity), and also recounts how his Chronicle job over the past 18 years has taken him to “every continent where golf is played” to profile a variety of Masters past champions.

It’s a fascinating look “behind the print” at a newspaper that has, appropriately, “chronicled” The Masters since its inception — and includes mentions of fellow writer David Weston, who is covering his 40th Masters this year, and Sports Editor John Boyette, who has been at the paper since 1986. “If I can’t find the media guide, I call [John] up because he’ll know the date and who won and what score and everything — it’s like an encyclopedia,” Michaux says. “These people really know what they’re doing. We have a staff that’s been doing this for decades.”
