Meanwhile, with Episode 83 we also welcome a new golf-traveling Canadian friend, Ian Andrew, who is best known for his golf architecture, restoration work and love of history. Ian joins Mitch and Darin for a wide-ranging discussion that begins with how his father helped nurture an early love of golf-course architecture and how a trip to famed Pinehurst No. 2 as a young man focused his approach to the game.

The trio then turn their attention to Ian’s work restoring the work of legendary Canadian golf architecture master Stanley Thompson, most notably at Highlands Links on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. The Cape Breton Highlands course has long been a favorite of the co-hosts, and a 2017 visit revealed the extraordinary labor of love behind Ian’s efforts to return the golf course to its original glory.

Along the way, they also discuss the difference between golf course “restorations” and “renovations” while hitting on many of the other projects on which Ian has worked, both past and present. It’s an illuminating conversation about the journey many of the golf courses we love go through over the years, and how the research, imagination and hard work of a skilled architect (sometimes with no more than shovel) can bring a master’s original vision back to life. We hope you enjoy the connection with Ian Andrew, golf architect.
