2020 WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational preview

This week represents the final World Golf Championships event of the year, with TPC Southwind hosting in Memphis in the second year of its upgrade to the WGC. There are 78 players in the field, with Brooks Koepka defending and Dustin Johnson a big horse-for-course name (at least before he went 80-80-78 in his last three rounds).

Each week, we’ll offer players in 3-5 buckets of pricing so as to offer some mix-and-matching with your lineups based on our recommendations.

We start by looking at the recent past, back at players who have finished inside the top 15 in the last five individual PGA Tour events.

Event Finish History

We like to look for potential horses for courses with most PGA Tour events, particularly those with regular host courses. Here are players with multiple top-15 finishes in this event in the last five years it was played.

We only have one year of the event, so last year’s top 15 is the list.

Course Fits

It seems to me the best way to use Strokes Gained data is to give a sense of a course fit. My working theory is a player is a course fit — or a potential course fit, at least — if their Strokes Gained breakout when they finish in the top 25 is similar to the average for top-25 finishers at this week’s event.

However, we only have one year for this event as a WGC. It plays much easier for the best players in the world, particularly compared to the FedEx St. Jude Classic. It’s hard to ID easy fits beyond the players who did well at Southwind pre-WGC.

2020 WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational DraftKings recommendations

$10,000 and up

We have five players in this group, and I think you can look at Rahm, Finau and Bryson, but they’re so expensive. Cantlay and Thomas are good plays, and I’d like Thomas more.

We have 20 players in this group, and this is where you really make your team. Webb, Xander, Hatton, Morikawa, Hovland, Finau, Fitzpatrick, Reed and Horschel are a great foundation of players.

DraftKings typically breaks the rest of the field in half at the $7,000 mark. Sungjae rested should be good. Stenson likes here. Poulter is hot and a good play. Adam Hadwin continues playing well. Max Homa found something at the 3M, but now he’s against better competition.

Below or at $7,000

We’re looking for bargains in this range. Ryan Palmer, Kevin Streelman are nice plays. Matt Wallace feels like a big yes. Mickelson loves this course and can’t miss the cut. Mac Hughes can be a good flier, as is Joel Dahmen.

My WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational DraftKings GPP lineup

  1. Tony Finau – $9,100
  2. Matthew Fitzpatrick – $9,000
  3. Patrick Reed – $8,800
  4. Billy Horschel – $8,500
  5. Ian Poulter – $7,400
  6. Matt Wallace – $6,700
