Hazeltine National to host 2028 Ryder Cup, continuing Midwestern trend

The 2028 Ryder Cup will be going to a repeat American venue for the first time since the biennial competition began in 1927.

Minnesota's Hazeltine National will return as host in 2028, 12 years after the American dozen ended a three-match losing skid in Chaska with a sound win over the Europeans on friendly turf. Prior to this announcement, no American venue had hosted the Ryder Cup more than once.

Fours venues in Europe have been repeat Ryder Cup hosts, with The Belfry in England hosting four times, as well Royal Birkdale, Royal Lytham and St. Annes, and Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club each hosting twice.

The announcement of the 2028 venue continues a run of bringing the Ryder Cup to the American Midwest. From Kentucky's Valhalla hosting in 2008, the Ryder Cup went to Medinah in Chicago in 2012, Hazeltine National in 2016, and it will go to Whistling Straits in 2020 and Hazeltine again in 2028. Long Island's Bethpage State Park Black Course will host in 2024, and The Olympic Club in San Francisco will host in 2032, deviating from the trend of planting the fall competition firmly in the middle of the country.

Of course, more Midwestern venues will be prevented from hosting future PGA Championships, as the PGA of America, which runs the PGA Championship and the American-hosted editions of the Ryder Cup, will be moving their major championship from August to May starting in 2019. Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis will host the PGA Championship this summer, and then a Midwestern venue is not listed as a future PGA Championship venue through 2028 (excluding 2025 and 2026 at this time).
