Tiger Woods has some new irons in the bag as he makes progress toward a potential PGA Tour comeback and return to competitive golf. The irons were spotted at a clinic Woods put on with Kevin Chappell, and an attendee's social sharing offered a window to Woods' current bag. The new irons, badged only with Woods' TGR logo, piqued interest of equipment junkies wondering who made the clubs.
TaylorMade? Woods did sign a deal to play the company's equipment in 2017, and the announcement of that deal included the possibility of developing a "new, personalized iron model" together.
Nike? Woods used to play Nike golf clubs, so that would make sense.
Miura? Woods had been rumored to be set to play their equipment prior to the TaylorMade signing.
According to GolfWRX, it was Nike who made those TGR irons, similar in nature to the VR Pro blades he used for years. GolfWRX cites a Nike source, who is quoted as saying these irons were made as the company was getting out of the hard goods golf business in summer and fall 2016. The move shocked the golf world and set off an equipment diaspora that's still working itself out in some ways.
This set of TGR prototype irons could well be one of the final custom sets Nike Golf ever made.
