Rory McIlroy has seen what American politics are like in 2016, and he's not too impressed.
On Wednesday at Trump National Doral, the world No. 3 was asked about the potential distraction of contesting the first World Golf Championships event of the year on a course owned by the divisive Republican presidential frontrunner. McIlroy sidestepped the question with humor.
"I'm not American," McIlroy said, drawing laughter from the room.
Then McIlroy delivered his assessment of the political landscape.
“Look, I've been following it. I really thought I knew what politics were until I started to watch some of these presidential debates," McIlroy said. “I mean, not saying that the political system in Northern Ireland is too strong at the moment either. It's shocking."
Since McIlroy isn't an American citizen -- he just has a home here -- he can't vote in the November election. However, even if he could, he said he might consider sitting out this one.
"I can't vote," he said, "and if I were to vote, I'm not sure I would want to vote for any of the candidates.”
