PREVIEW: Tour Edge Exotics EX9 Long 3 fairway wood

Raise your hand if you're not the most accurate driver of the golf ball.

I picked up a hand off the keyboard.

Even if you're a longer player, if you can't find the fairway, golf is tougher. That's why a number of golfers prefer to use their 3-wood whenever possible off the tee. It makes good sense. It's a shorter club, easier to control and gives the player a better chance of finding the short grass. However, a 3-wood is almost always shorter than the driver in your bag, so you're sacrificing a significant amount of distance for relative accuracy.

Tour Edge Exotics is hoping to change the compromise with its new Exotics EX9 Long 3-wood, which they quietly unveiled at the PGA Merchandise Show last month. The 185 cc 3-wood head is paired with a 43.5-inch shaft to promote more distance. The deeper head combines a 15-3-3-3 beta titanium, variable-thickness cup face and a hyper-steel body for maximum distance and forgiveness.

The SlipStream sole, designed to minimize turf interaction, is on this club as well. While you're probably not planning to hit this much off the turf -- it's meant to be hit off the tee -- it's a good feature to have if you're trying to pull off a stinger-style shot.
