Tom Watson had to call Tiger Woods to learn of Ryder Cup withdrawal

American Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson wanted to make it clear: He called Tiger Woods to learn Woods withdrew his name from consideration to make Watson's team, not the other way around.

After announcing his three captain's picks in New York on Tuesday, Watson told reporters he learned of Woods' intentions after calling the 14-time major winner.

“Tiger told me when I called Tiger," Watson said, according to GolfChannel.com. "He didn’t call me. I called him."

Woods announced his withdrawal on his website on Aug. 13 with some ambiguous language in regard to who contacted who.

"I have already spoken to Tom [Watson] about the Ryder Cup, and while I greatly appreciate his thinking about me for a possible captain's pick, I took myself out of consideration,” Woods said.

The next question: Did Watson call Woods after reading the news on Woods' website?
