Bubba Watson shot 81…playing golf with one club

Have you ever taken the One-Club Challenge? Bubba Watson did recently and shot an impressive 81.

Watson used a 20-degree hybrid to shoot 9 over for 18 holes at Pelican Hill G.C., according too an article posted at GolfWRX. Tim Mitchell, a PGA of America professional who reported the story, said Watson told staff at the club that he sometimes gets bored playing with 14 clubs and challenges himself by picking just one and trying to  hit all the shots needed in a full bag.

Obviously, Bubba Watson is pretty good at golf. And awfully imaginative, as the 2012 Masters playoff showed.

The One-Club Challenge or its variant, the more popular Three-Club Challenge, is a great way to test your game and force you to think creatively to get around the golf course. Obviously, it's kind of hard to hit a finesse shot with a 4-iron or a hybrid. A greenside bunker shot is next to impossible in a conventional sense. But if you play conservative, efficient golf, you can shoot a good score. Maybe not 81 good, but I shot 94 a couple of years ago for 18 holes with a 4-iron while playing in the 100-Hole Hike.

So it can be done.
