Tiger Woods looking good after first round of BMW Championship

Tiger Woods had never seen Conway Farms before Wednesday, but played it like a member -- Luke Donald, anyone? -- on Thursday in the opening round of the BMW Championship.

Woods shot 5-under 66 to sit three shots behind Brandt Snedeker, whose 8-under 63 leads the 70-player field.

The world No. 1 began the day on the back nine at Conway Farms, playing a rather mundane opening side. Woods began with a birdie, sticking his approach shot to 3 feet, but then made six consecutive pars before another birdie at No. 17 to turn in 2 under par.

The front side of the course and his second nine of the day were more tumultuous and exciting.

Woods had five birdies on his back nine for the day, two bogeys and two pars. Those bogeys came on short misses for par, while another miss for birdie came on a short putt that Woods pantomimed had been affected by the Illinois wind.

Starting the week at No. 2 in the FedEx Cup standings, Woods is projected to remain in second place if he holds his current position. Brandt Snedeker is projected to head to the Tour Championship in Atlanta in first place if he wins this week.

Players inside the top five in FedEx Cup points heading into the playoff finale next week at East Lake can win the $10 million bounty is they win the Tour Championship.
