Louise Suggs has 3 LPGA wins added thanks to biographer

Until the latter half of the 20th century, record-keeping in golf was not the most sophisticated. There were -- and remain -- a lot of gaps in the competitive records of so many players.

In fact, the record keeping is so suspect that tournament victories can even slip through the cracks, even for one of the best players of all-time.

The research done Elaine Scott, by a biographer for LPGA founder Louise Suggs, has helped increase Suggs' career win tally by three, according to Golfweek. The former LPGA Tour communications director found Suggs never received credit for three titles: the 1946 Pro-Lady Victory National Championship, which Suggs won as an amateur with Ben Hogan, and the Sea Island Open and the Naples Pro-Am in 1961, Suggs' final full season.

Those three wins now give Suggs a total of 61 for her career, moving her ahead of Patty Berg for fourth all-time. Suggs trails Kathy Whitworth (88), Mickey Wright (82) and Annika Sorenstam (69) on the all-time victories list.

Suggs turns 90 on Sept. 7.

Last year, a Golf News Net reader did some research into PGA Tour win records and found that four players were not given credit for wins earned in the National Team Championship in 1968 and '72. The PGA Tour responded to the inquiry by crediting George Archer and Bobby Nichols, the 1968 winners, as well as the winning team from '72, Babe Hiskey and Kermit Zarley, with an official victory.
