Wagner P.I. no longer: Johnson shaves off the ‘stache

That hideous thing that has been on Johnson Wagner's face all season? It's gone now.

Wagner shaved off what has become a trademark - his mustache - after firing a second-round and season-worst-tying 79 at Bethpage Black at The Barclays.

“I got tired of missing cuts,” Wagner said Wednesday at the Deutsche Bank Championship. “The mustache was originally designed to get me to the Masters, and it did it. Now it’s lost its flair for me. It’s nice to be without it.”

He will go into the second leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs as a clean-shaven man, showing off those boyish features that might well have inspired the facial hair in the first place.

Wagner had originally grown a full beard during the Thanksgiving holiday. He shaved it down to the 'stache for the onset of the season, winning the Sony Open in Hawaii to gain a trip to the Masters.

In recent weeks, however, Wagner has not enjoyed much mustache mojo. He has missed the cut in four of his last six starts and in eight of his last 15.
