Azinger: Take the hot hand with captain’s picks, not the veteran

It's the biennial captain's conundrum: who to pick with their wild-card selections, the hot hand or the veteran player?

2008 American Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger suggests Davis Love III go with the hot hand over experience - that is, if there's not a veteran playing great golf these next two-plus weeks.

"My picks? I use the next 3 weeks to see who gets hot. I take current form over experience all day long," he tweeted Friday. "Americans have only won 4 Ryder Cups in the last 27yrs. Experience? I'll take who I believe is most confident, on hot streak."

Four years ago, Azinger practiced what he is preaching now. He picked Steve Stricker, J.B. Holmes, Hunter Mahan and Chad Campbell. All but Campbell were rookies. Mahan was responsible for a team high of 3.5 points, while Holmes and Campbell contributed with 2.5 and 2 points, respectively. Stricker struggled, netting just a half-point.

Love III will name his four captain's picks on Sept. 4, after the conclusion of the Deutsche Bank Championship.
