In the all-Florida final of the 87th U.S. Amateur Public Links, South Beach won handily.
Miami resident T.J. Vogel defeated Kevin Aylwin, who lives four hours north in New Smyrna Beach, in a 12-and-10 rout at Soldier Hollow GC in Midway, Utah.
Vogel dominated the morning portion of the 36-hole match, ending the first 18 holes with a 10-up lead. Vogel made eight birdies and no bogeys in the opening round, setting up a short, stress-free afternoon round with six birdies in the final seven holes to win four holes.
The first four holes of the second round were halved before Vogel won two of the last four to close out the championship.
Vogel's victory is the second biggest in the history of the championship. (From 1967-74, the championship was all stroke play.) In 1985, Jim Sorenson beat Jay Cooper by a 12-and-11 count at Wailua CC in Hawaii.
