Sick as a Byrd: Jonathan shoots 64 in Greenbrier opener

Jonathan Byrd is not feeling his best this week at The Greenbrier Classic, but he played his best on Thursday to shoot 6-under 64 and trail leader Vijay Singh by a shot after Day 1.

"I did everything well today," he said. "I drove the ball pretty well, I kept it in play, I had a lot of good iron shots."

A good round will help cure what ails almost anyone. Byrd drained a few 40-foot bombs, too, to help him feel better.

Then again, maybe Byrd's current form is stronger than any bug. Byrd has finished in the top 12 in four of his last five PGA Tour events. A two-week break after the U.S. Open seems to have done nothing to hurt his game. The nightlife at The Greenbrier, however, might.

"My family comes this week, it's a fun family week, so I want to work hard on the course, and then when I get off the
course they want to play hard, too," he said. "So being a little under the weather makes it difficult on both ends."
