The 2017 British Open Championship field of 156 players is made up of players who get in the field through the most extensive exemption and qualifying list in major championship golf. As the field takes shape, the R&A keeps an alternate list of players who could fill out the field.

The R&A will pull from the British Open Championship alternate list to fill the field of 156 players, with the governing body using this list solely to replace players who cannot compete in the event for any reason.

Anirban Lahiri was the first alternate until July 11, when he replaced Scott Piercy, who took his name out of the tournament, in the field at Royal Birkdale. Tony Finau replaced 2003 Open champion Ben Curtis on July 12.

On July 19, Brandt Snedeker withdrew, placing James Hahn in the championship.
The R&A has produced a short list of alternates who could get in the field. Anirban Lahiri, who was the first alternate, is now off the list.

  2. Tony Finau (replaces Ben Curtis)
