PREVIEW: Callaway Steelhead XR fairway woods revive the original popular design

The original Callaway Golf Steelhead fairway woods were the stuff of legend. They were -- and, for many players, still are -- in a lot of bags. They were easy to hit and inspired confidence.

There's been a trend from the company in the last few years to go back to designs like Steelhead and remake them with modern design and modern materials. So, on the heel of the success of the reintroduction of the Steelhead iron line, Callaway is bringing back the complementary fairway woods.

So, what's new with this modern design, the Steelhead XR fairway woods?

The original hawkeye sole shape has been modernized to improve turf interaction and versatility. The steel Hyper Speed Face Cup and body are now paired with a J-36 carbon-fiber crown, complete with SpeedStep ridges, that allowed engineers 20 grams compared to the XR fairway woods to use to improve moment of inertia rating and lower that center of gravity.

The Steelhead XR line is available July 14 for $229 each in 3+(13.5 degrees), 3- (15 degrees) , 4+ (16 degrees), 5- (18 degrees), Heavenwood (20.5 degrees), 7- (21 degrees) and 9- (24 degrees) models.
