PGA Tour changes FedEx Cup points distribution for 2016-17 season

The way the PGA Tour distributes FedEx Cup points is changing for the 2016-17 season.

The Associated Press reported on the change, which is meant to change the distribution of points to more closely mirror the payout of tournament purses. Tour officials recognized that players who posted top-15 finishes were not rewarded in FedEx Cup points in the same way that they were paid in earnings. With the end of the exemption for players who finish in the top 125 of the regular season money list, this distribution change somewhat merges the two concepts -- FedEx Cup points and money -- closer to one in the same.

In standard issue PGA Tour events, the winner will still receive 500 FedEx Cup points, and the distribution in points for the top 14 players will remain the same. From 15th to 67th place, players will get fewer FedEx Cup points this season than last, with 34th through 45th place losing the most points year over year, getting 15 fewer points.

However, players who finish 68th place or worse and still make the cut will actually earn slightly more points, with 70th place earning 2 full more FedEx Cup points than last season.

In total, a regular PGA Tour event will now offer approximately 503 fewer FedEx Cup points, down to 3022 points from 3526 points.

For majors, The Players, the World Golf Championships and opposite-field events, the points distribution is the same for the top 21 places. The majors, Players and WGCs will offer 375 fewer points, while the opposite-field events will offer 269 less points.
