Hideki Matsuyama won the 2016 Waste Management Phoenix Open in a four-hole, sudden-death playoff against Rickie Fowler. Both players finished at 14-under 270 at TPC Scottsdale, including each making 72nd-hole birdies to force overtime.

On the first playoff hole, at the par-4 18th, both players made par, including Fowler getting up-and-down from short of the green. They played No. 18 again for the second playoff hole, with each making mid-range birdie putts. Then, they played the par-4 10th, both going past the pin, with Fowler going off the green. Fowler drained a 9-footer to save par and Matsuyama two-putted to extend the playoff to the drivable par-4 17th.

On No. 17, like in regulation, Fowler's tee shot found the greenside water hazard and he was unable to get up-and-down to save par. Matsuyama two-putted for par and the win, his second on the PGA Tour and first since the 2014 Memorial.
