The par-4 12th hole at TPC Sawgrass' Stadium Course is a dud compared to the rest of the Pete Dye masterpiece.
The hole is about 350 yards and plays for the best in the world as just a long iron-wedge to hopefully set up a simple birdie. It's the only stinker on a back nine designed to build to a crescendo in the final three holes.
Well, that's changing after The Players 2016.
The PGA Tour announced Monday that the 12th will be redesigned to become a driveable par 4 starting with the 2017 edition of the tournament.
"The redesigned 12th hole will add an element of excitement early on the back nine which we expect will be well-received by contestants, spectators and television viewers around the world," said PGA Tour Executive Vice President and Chief of Operations Andy Pazder.
That's the biggest of a number of other changes to the course that will happen after the May event. Several greens (Nos. 1, 4, 8, 9, 11, 13 and 14) will also be reshaped to add hole locations, while all of the greens will be resurfaced with TifEagle Bermudagrass. The practice range will also be improved, particularly the professional back tee line.
