Camden Backel's going to be missing a few days of school this week...so he can play in the PGA Tour's Sanderson Farms Championship.

On Monday, the 17-year-old Madison Central High School student survived an eight-man playoff for a spot in the tournament. Jake Younan, Craig Kanada and Garrett Osborn are the other three players to get through the Monday four-spot.

Backel got through Friday's pre-qualifying tournament with a 67, then shot 7-under 65 at Lake Caroline Golf Club in the 86-player Monday qualifying tournament. That was good enough to land in the eight-man playoff with seven players, including several familiar PGA Tour names: Steve Marino, Matt Harmon, Brad Elder, Len Mattice, Jay Woodson, Shane Bertsch and Smylie Kaufman.

A birdie on the 10th hole kept Backel in the playoff, then a par on the next hole got him the final spot in the field.
