Our first-ever “Golf Travel Tips” episode of the “Talking GolfGetaways with Mitch Laurance and Darin Bunch” podcast has it all — products, comparison of golf-club-shipping services, book suggestions, our favorite shoes, socks and golf carry bags, you name it. So jump in and give a listen — here are a few of the tips you’ll hear Mitch and Darin discuss in Episode 116, presented by Alabama Tourism:

Tip No. 1: Go play the Devil’s Paintbrush outside Toronto, Ontario, Canada, if you ever get the chance. After Canadian golf scribe Lorne Rubenstein was on the podcast back in 2017 (episodes 41 and 46), we’ve made it our mission to get up to his favorite one-two punch golf club of the Devil’s Paintbrush and the Devil’s Pulpit — and Darin finally got the chance to play both courses this summer. Each of the courses is outstanding, but there’s something extra special about Paintbrush (designed by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry of Erin Hills fame) that left Darin wanting for more, and hoping he can find his way back onto this ultra-creative layout again in the future.

How about making sure you play the magnificent par-3 short courses on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, especially the 18-holer at Grand National in the Auburn-Opelika area?

Want to know Mitch and Darin’s favorite shoes, socks and golf bags? (Hint: Under Armour, Puma, Kentwool, MacKenzie and Linksoul get lots of love)

How about which side we take in the LuggageForward vs. ShipSticks debate? (One is preferred domestically, but the other excels when it comes to shipping your clubs abroad, especially into some of the Canadian provinces)
Want the ultimate piece of carry-on luggage, complete with genius organizing touches and a built-in battery to charge your mobile devices? There’s a company out there ready to take you “away,” and its suitcases are worth every penny.

Looking for the ultimate protection for your golf clubs when you travel, even if you’re not playing fragile hickory sticks like Darin and Mitch? We make the “hard case” for Southern California’s SKB, which specializes in cases for everything from musical instruments to weaponry — and one of their golf cases has lasted Darin more than 10 years.

And, finally, what about raingear? It never seems to fit correctly, never seems to work properly, and always seems to be too expensive. So Darin went on the search for a company that will create custom rainpants and jackets, and found exactly what we was in search of through a little company out of Idaho called Foxwear, where Lou Binik makes all manner of extreme-weather clothing for skiiers, snowboarders, cyclists — and now golfers, too.

And that’s just our “first” Travel Tips episode. Hit us with your golf-travel questions for our next one, and we’ll answer them in another episode later this year. Until then, enjoy the open road or friendly skies or whatever mode of transportation you use to find your next memorable golf getaway.
