Heading toward their “iconic” 100th episode of the “Talking GolfGetaways” podcast, hosts Mitch Laurance and Darin Bunch take a break from standard bucket-list banter for a special Episode 95 highlighting a few bright spots of community golf around the country, including recent visits to Florida’s historic nine-hole Winter Park Golf Course (recently redesigned by Keith Rhebb and Riley Johns) and Goat Hill Park in Oceanside, California, which was saved from bulldozers by a team including clothier John Ashworth. Both courses are stellar examples of what fun, affordable golf can be — and how golf facilities can be a hub of activity for local golfers of all abilities.

Before they dive into the discussion of Winter Park and Goat Hill Park (in an episode brought to you by 2UNDR Apparel — visit 2UNDR.com and use the promo code GNN20 for 20% off your next purchase), Mitch and Darin also talk a bit of Scotland in search of input from listeners about their favorite courses and hidden gems (if there really is such a thing anymore) on a trip Darin and Golf News Net Ratings Editor Eric Hart are planning for Fall 2018. A discussion about historic Prestwick evolves into Mitch’s memories of one of his all-time favorite golf experiences, playing nearby Prestwick St. Nicholas, the 26th oldest golf course in the world, dotted with Salt Pan buildings behind the first green of this historic 6,000-yard, par-69 track. Mitch’s story already has Darin hitting the Google for research (there’s a great flyover video available online) and working to add Prestwick St. Nicholas into their future itinerary.
Also in Episode 95, the hosts take a brief moment to give a shout out to golf buddy Pete Flanigan (read his interesting blog at http://www.re-gripped.com) who is gaining a reputation for arriving at golf destinations with gifts in hand for his playing partners and traveling companions. In addition to bringing Journeyman whiskey on a 2017 trip to Wisconsin, Pete showed up to Goat Hill Park recently with bottles of much sought-after (at least by Mitch and Darin) Sortilege liqueur made from Canadian Maple Whiskey, which they have often described as tasting “like drinking pancakes.”
It’s a fun episode with a mix of information and insight as “Talking GolfGetaways” heads toward a major milestone (hopefully the first of many), and it’s bound to get you re-thinking some of the golf courses you play — not only in your home area but also on golf road trips across the country and behind.
