Talking GolfGetaways 78: Emergency 9 with “Breaking Eighty” golf traveler Sean Ogle

After opening this latest episode of “Talking GolfGetaways” podcast with a discussion of golf courses allowing dogs and a recommendation by Sean Ogle about the best Scotch for his money anywhere (Scotland’s Bowmore Islay Single Malt), co-hosts Mitch Laurance and Darin Bunch jump into an insightful “Emergency 9” golf-travel questionnaire discussion with the founder of BreakingEighty.com and the new Eighty Club designed to connect traveling golfers who want to share their private courses and passions for the game.

  • Right off the first tee, Sean tells us why his “Favorite Course Anywhere in the World” is Pebble Beach, an answer he thinks might be polarizing but defends vigorously (the word “fun” is important here).
  • He then details the two choices for his Bucket List Course/Destination — National Golf Links of America on Long Island and a trip to Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand (which Darin is happy to chime in about since he visited two of those three earlier this year).
  • What’s the Best Place He’s Ever Stayed? Sean’s off-the-charts (and first-time answer) is a resort in the Maldives (in the Indian Ocean) where he and his wife honeymooned — the Shangri-La Villingili, which included a 3-par course that Sean could play early every morning. (And he also gives a shoutout to Scotland’s Gleneagles Hotel.)
  • Two answers are once again given for the Single Best Thing You’ve Ever Eaten on a Trip question, beginning with the filet mignon at Bones Steakhouse in Atlanta (“the best steak I’ve ever had in my life”) before veering a bit into the drinking side of things with a flight of 50-year-old Scotch at Tom Colicchio’s Craftsteak at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on a trip to play Cascata with his friend Dan — an experience Sean says he’ll talk about for the rest of his life. (You’ll have to listen to find out about the scotches, and why it may be the best tasting deal you’ll find anywhere.)
  • Besides golf and the people on a trip, what’s the Most Important Thing On a Golf Trip? Sean believes the experience of going to places to play that you would never go to for another reason is a prime benefit of a well-planned golf journey.
  • One Piece of Apparel He Can’t Live Without? Another unique answer by this most unique guy. Holderness & Bourne golf polos make the top of Sean’s list for golf shirts that are a necessity. (He also mentions Arccos Golf performance technology as a fave platform for working on your game.)
  • Who is the Most Interesting Person You’ve Golfed With? For Sean, it turns out to be a playing partner for a round outside Santa Barbara in California who had a lifetime of great stories to tell. And his second choice is another memorable round, this time at Scotland’s Kingsbarns when Sean was paired with two Japanese members of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club on the day the vote to allow women occurred.
  • Oregon’s beautiful Tokatee Golf Club, between Eugene and Bend, gets the nod as the One Course You Wish Everyone Knew About answer. But a second Oregon answer is added moments later as Sean talks about the Bally Bandon Sheep Ranch experience just north of Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, a completely unique collection of greens and forge-your-own-trail fairways much-praised by Mitch, Darin and many others.
  • For the Bonus Question, Sean tells us his favorite personal golf story, detailing the post-round experience after playing Pebble Beach when a superstar hanging out at the next table asked about playing Royal Dornoch, one of Sean’s favorite tracks anywhere in the world. (Well make you listen to hear who the “mystery guest” asking the question happened to be.)

It’s another wide-ranging and fun Emergency 9 episode — packed with ideas from the mind of the well-traveled and passionate Sean Ogle, a perfect golf-travel-quiz subject if ever there were one.
