Talking GolfGetaways 66: Seamus Golf’s Akbar Chisti really loves Goat Hill Park!

Seamus Golf’s Akbar Chisti can’t stop raving about Goat Hill Park in Oceanside, Calif.

It’s another Emergency 9 golf-travel quiz, but this is the first E9 episode in which a guest can’t stop raving about a single property — in this case, it’s Goat Hill Park in Oceanside, California, that has captured the attention of Seamus Golf’s Akbar Chisti as he offers it up for multiple answers on the “Talking GolfGetaways” podcast with hosts Mitch Laurance and Darin Bunch.

Of course it’s tough to limit Akbar to one answer to any of our golf-travel queries, and he begins by giving three answers to our Favorite Course or Destination Anywhere in the World topic. You’ll hear why Bandon Dunes Resort (no surprise there), the town of St. Andrews (no surprise there either) and the newly renovated Goat Hill Park in Oceanside, California (surprise!) all top his list. And then he offers up the oft-chosen Bucket List Destination answer of “heading Down Under” to Barnbougle Dunes on the island of Tasmania and his desire to also visit New Zealand as part of a trip to that part of the world.

When it comes to the Best Place He’s Ever Stayed, Akbar zeroes in on an iconic spot for lodging and history — “the promised land” at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge. And he mentions one of his favorite libations, the Bay Hill Hummer, among his many reasons for loving the resort. Count on Akbar for that kind of inside tip. What’s the Best Thing He’s Ever Eaten on a Trip? Again, multiple answers, but according to Chistie, you have to try the shrimp and grits on Sea Island in South Carolina, as well as the legendary Burger Dog at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.

Next, Akbar takes on his Most Important Thing Other Than Golf on any trip, and you’ll want to hear him wax poetic about the importance of a great shower (music to the ears of Darin, our resident #ShowerWhore), including giving us a detailed description of the shower at San Francisco Golf Club, which he considers to be “the best in the world.” And for his Most Important Piece of Apparel question, Akbar, a walking golfer in any weather, gives the nod to ear warmers as the key component in his apparel arsenal. The reason why will have you wondering, Why Didn’t I Think of That?

As expected, from this 8 handicap golfer with a sense of adventure and a link to the traditions of the game, Akbar explains why he loves playing shorter courses with a high fun quotient, and playing it forward with persimmon woods as a way to zone in on that element of the game. And following up on that traditional theme, he tells us why his Favorite Playing Partner is Matt Brown, a member of the iconic Highlands Golf Links in Oregon and the creator of the Gearhart Blades company (maker of fine forged irons and milled putters), citing Matt’s love of playing the game without keeping score and always having a good time.

In his final Emergency 9 answer, Akbar explains why the One Course He Wishes Everyone Knew About is the historic Balcomie Links at Crail in Scotland (also home to the Gil Hanse-designed Craighead Links). And as he shares those thoughts, you’ll understand why Akbar is one of our most engaging, articulate and all-in leaders when it comes to keeping traditions alive while building Seamus Golf into a forward-thinking and beautiful example of the best our game has to offer.
