As someone with a deep connection to golf and its history, master craftsman and hickory-lover Tim Alpaugh shared some great insights about his travels during our “Talking GolfGetaways” Scotland Week, and now returns to go question-for-question with hosts Mitch Laurance and Darin Bunch in a wide-ranging Emergency 9 discussion about the places he loves worldwide.

  • Tim starts in Scotland as he describes the courses he considers his favorites anywhere on the planet — specifically Cruden Bay and the iconic back-nine holes of North Berwick’s famed West Links. And he also shares a bit of an insider’s view of what it’s like to play the very private Pine Valley, which he has done many times both with regular clubs and his hickories.
  • His love of pre-1930s golf and the work of Dr. Alister MacKenzie places two California tracks at the top of his bucket list — Cypress Point and Pasatiempo.
  • Favorite place he’s ever stayed? Two contrasting spots jump to mind — the Links House at Royal Dornoch in Scotland and the stunning Four Seasons Resort Nevis in the West Indies of the Caribbean.
  • And how about this answer to the best thing Alpaugh has ever ever eaten on a golf trip? He’s a sucker for the peach ice cream sandwich at Augusta National, as well as the peanut butter, jelly and bacon sandwich at the historic Seth Raynor-designed Fishers Island Club in New York.
  • Tim puts an interesting twist on his appreciation of the game when asked what’s most important to him besides golf on a trip, citing the element of “meeting people you weren’t scheduled to meet” — a great clue to the personality of the outgoing and open-to-anything Mr. Alpaugh.
  • And how does he approach the golf course? Tim carries two handicaps, a 9 with steel-shafted clubs and a 13 with his beloved hickories, and likes playing between 6,000 and 6,300 yards (though he says he enjoys playing from anyone else’s tees as well, given that the thing most important to him is the shot values of a course, not its distance).
  • As Tim ends his Emergency 9, you’ll find out why his favorite playing partner is “Anyone who shares my philosophy of the game,” and why he circles back to Scotland for the course he wishes everyone knew about — Brora in the Highlands (a “Talking GolfGetaways” favorite).

Thanks to Tim Alpaugh for an engaging, interesting Emergency 9, a perfect reflection of the qualities he brings to any discussion. You can find Tim, and see his stunningly creative woodwork, by following him @claretdreamer on Instagram.
