At least it wasn't via Snapchat?
Rory McIlroy ended his nearly three-year relationship with Caroline Wozniacki over the phone, according to a report in the New York Times.
McIlroy ended their relationship, then announced its end on May 21 ahead of the European Tour's flagship tournament in England. The 25-year-old said he realized he wasn't prepared for what marriage entails.
Wozniacki did not bounce back from the end of their engagement in the same way McIlroy did when he won last week's BMW PGA Championship despite a horrendous career record at host Wentworth Club in England. The former No. 1 lost in the first round of the French Open on Tuesday in a three-set match. It was her opening-match exit at Roland Garros since her 2007 debut.
“You’re not prepared for something like this, and it came as a bit of a shock,” Wozniacki said. “I just tried to prepare the best that I could and really tried to focus on my match and on what I had to do out there.”
Wozniacki has fallen to 64th in the women's tennis ranking.
