It's a pretty nice endorsement for a niche sport when one of the world's best soccer players is seen playing your sport in a global ad campaign.

That's what happened to foot golf in a new Nike ad featuring Wayne Rooney and Rory McIlroy.

The pair face off against each other on the golf course in the spot which showcases Nike's newest soccer ball. Rooney is playing foot golf, kicking and bending and spinning the ball with amazing, CGI-rendered accuracy. Meanwhile, McIlroy is sticking it close with his Nike Golf clubs, just trying to keep up with the Manchester United star.

So, what's foot golf? Well, it's basically what Rooney plays in the ad: It's golf, on a golf course, hazards and all, but with a soccer ball and your foot instead of a golf ball and 14 clubs. It's catching on in parts of the world, including at a California golf course which also offers a rate for foot golf.

It's also not the first time a footballer has figured prominently in showing off foot golf. Several Real Madrid players were featured in a foot golf video earlier this year.
