Brandt Snedeker not only will become the first defending FedEx Cup champion to reach the Tour Championship the next season, but he might be the first player to repeat.

The 2012 FedEx Cup champion ended the day with 8-under 63 and leads the third leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs by a shot over Zach Johnson.

Snedeker took it deep on Thursday in the opening round of the BMW Championship at Conway Farms, making seven consecutive birdies to set the 2013 PGA Tour record for the longest string of the season. Beginning at No. 10, Snedeker dropped birdies at Nos. 13-18 before making the turn and notching another birdie at the first hole.

Six other players had a streak of six consecutive birdies in 2013, including Louis Oosthuizen, Billy Horschel and Mike Weir.

Snedeker currently sits ninth in the FedEx Cup standings, but would be first if he wins this week. The top five players in the standings after the BMW Championship can win the FedEx Cup if they first win the Tour Championship at East Lake next week.
