Phil Mickelson may want to waive the white flag at the Old White TPC.
For a third consecutive year, Mickelson will miss the cut at The Greenbrier Classic in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va. After opening with 4-over 74, Mickelson shot a second-round 68, but that left him well short of the cut at a course where one of five 59s in PGA Tour history have been shot.
Mickelson will miss the cut in a PGA Tour event in three consecutive years for the first time in his career.
On the one hand, Mickelson has something to celebrate. His Friday 68 was the first time he has broken par at the Jim Justice-owned resort. It lowers his scoring average at the track to 71.17 in six rounds played.
Compare that scoring average to any other PGA Tour event Mickelson plays, and it's close to the worst.
- WGC-Bridgestone Invitational: 70.92
- The Masters: 70.97
- Arnold Palmer Invitational: 71.13
- PGA Championship: 71.21
- the Memorial Tournament: 71.31
- U.S. Open: 71.87
- The Players Championship: 71.89
- Open Championship: 72.29
Obviously, the sample size for Mickelson at Greenbrier is less than any of these other events, but so far, so bad for Lefty in West Virginia.
Rest assured, Mickelson will not be listening to any John Denver as he fires up the jet to head home to Castle Stuart and the Scottish Open before the Open Championship at Muirfield.
