Jack Nicklaus on Tiger Woods-Sergio Garcia spat: It’s “stupid”

Jack Nicklaus thinks the whole back-and-forth between Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia is "stupid."

That's precisely what the 18-time major champion said Wednesday ahead of his Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio.

More succinctly, Nicklaus said,  "The Sergio-Tiger thing is stupid."

Woods and Garcia got into a verbal spat after an incident during their final pairing in the third round of The Players Championship. Garcia accused Woods of breaking decorum and causing a distraction that led to a bogey at TPC Sawgrass. Woods said Garcia was whining, which wasn't surprising to him, then said he would not make up with Garcia. Garcia then said in England last week he didn't need Woods in his life before using a racial epithet during a European Tour gala in response to a question about a potential peace dinner at the U.S. Open.

Garcia has apologized for the remarks.

Back to Nicklaus, however, who sees a shift in how the sport is covered -- and how it's players want to be covered.

"When we played we tried to get people to write about anything we did," he said. "Today, you're trying to keep someone from writing about it."
