Jason Dufner will skip next week's FedEx Cup playoffs opener at The Barclays at Bethpage Black on Long Island.
Dufner is No. 3 in the regular season points standings, which wrap up this week at the Wyndham Championship. He is practically assured a spot in the remaining three playoff events, played out over the span of four weeks after The Barclays.
“I’ve had a pretty heavy schedule since Firestone or so and I’m looking forward to the second part of the Playoffs,” Dufner said Friday. “I’m just not going to be able to do eight out of nine weeks with the Tour Championship and Ryder Cup at the end of it.”
The New Orleans winner maintained a commitment to Greensboro, however, because of a long-standing relationship with tournament title sponsor Wyndham. Dufner is seven shots off the halfway lead of Jimmy Walker at 5 under par. Were he to win this weekend, Dufner would overtake Tiger Woods for the top spot heading into the playoffs.
Dufner knows, however, he merely needs to get to Atlanta and let the chips fall where they may - just like they did for last year's FedEx Cup winner, Bill Haas, who entered the finale at No. 25 in points.
"We saw last year with Bill," Dufner said, "he played really well at the end and kind of snuck in and won the thing. So if you’re in that last event you’ve got a chance to win it.”
