Chalk up another major championship victory for the belly putter.
Fred Couples won the Senior Open Championship at Turnberry on Sunday, closing with 3-under 67 to win by two shots over Gary Hallberg at 9 under par.
Couples birdied the last two holes at the Alisa Course to claim his second Champions Tour major, adding onto the Senior Players title from a year ago at Westchester CC.
"Coming down the stretch, I hit a lot of really, really good shots and I feel great about that because when you miss at Turnberry, you're going to make bogey," Couples said.
Barry Lane, Carl Mason and Dick Mast finished tied for third at 4 under par.
For a second consecutive senior major, Bernhard Langer could not close the deal with the 54-hole lead. Entering play up by a shot, the German shot 75 to finish tied for sixth with Mark Wiebe, John Cook and Peter Fowler. At 1 under at seven holes, Langer made four bogeys and a double bogey at the 12th in the final 11 holes to lose his chance.
"Obviously, the back nine was a disaster. Just hit a couple of loose shots. Got some bad breaks," Langer said. "Ending up in pot bunkers and all of those things. We were on the clock, as well, which didn't help. We had to rush a lot of the shots. Didn't make it any easier."
Langer shot 2 over in the finale of the U.S. Senior Open after carrying a four-shot advantage into the final round.
