Aussie Brendan Jones will not compete in the 2016 Olympic golf tournament, if eligible, because he does not think the sport should be included in the quadrennial spectacle.

"I don’t agree that golf should be in the Olympics,’’ Jones said, according to the Australia-based Canberra Times. "It’s like the tennis, who even knows who won the gold medal in the tennis?"

Golf will be a part of the Olympic program in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro for the first time since 1904. It will also be in the 2020 games.

Jones, 37, intends to play professionally for five more years before retiring in 2017. He believes any sport that does not value an Olympic gold medal as the pinnacle achievement should not be in the games.

"These guys are playing every week for millions of dollars and an Olympic gold medal in their house isn’t going to take pride of place," said Jones, ranked 106th in the Official World Golf Ranking. "In golf you’ve got the four majors, in tennis you’ve got the majors, I just don’t see golf being an Olympic sport."
