Caroline Wozniacki was sent packing in the first round of the women's draw at Wimbledon on Wednesday. Not one to mope apparently, the Dane found her way to Royal Portrush to cheer on boyfriend and world No. 2 Rory McIlroy in the Irish Open.
McIlroy did not disappoint, opening with 2-under 70 at the Dunluce links to trail Jeev Milkha Singh by five shots as play was concluding on Thursday.
The 2011 U.S. Open champion holds the competitive course record at Portrush, shooting 11-under-par 61 in 2005 in the North of Ireland Amateur Open Championship. He recalled the historic round Wednesday, surprised how quickly the time has passed and how the course has changed.
"That was seven years ago; time goes pretty quickly," McIlroy said. "It's a different golf course now, a few new tee boxes, and I couldn't have gone on a better day, that day when I did shoot 61."
