2016 Ryder Cup: When captains make wild-card picks

The 2016 Ryder Cup U.S. and European teams are mostly set after automatic qualifying ends on Aug. 28, 2016, with the conclusion of The Barclays on the PGA Tour and the Made in Denmark on the European Tour.

However, automatic qualifying only determines eight of 12 spots on the American team, while only nine of 12 spots on the European team are decided.

At the conclusion of qualifying, U.S. captain Davis Love III will have two weeks before making four captain's picks. Three will be made at the conclusion of the BMW Championship, which ends Sept. 11, 2016. The fourth pick will be made at the conclusion of the Tour Championship on Sept. 25, 2016.

This is a change from the 2014 Ryder Cup, when captain Tom Watson chose to make three captain's picks at the conclusion of the Deutsche Bank Championship.

As for the European captain Darren Clarke, he made three captain's picks, set for Aug. 30, 2016, after the Made in Denmark. This system is consistent with what has been in place when Colin Montgomerie was captain in 2010. Clarke added Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer and Thomas Pieters to round out his team.
