The 2016 U.S. Open field is largely determined through open qualifying, which culminates with whittling down almost all of the 9,877 entrants through local, then sectional qualifying tournaments.
Most of the sectional qualifying tournaments are held in the United States, with 10 held on June 6 at various sites, and another two held internationally in Japan and England, respectively. These are 36-hole events with U.S. Open slots on offer based on the quality of the field and the number of players at a particular site.
