Why did Boo Weekley shave his really long beard? Fishing, naturally

Boo Weekley has played his way into contention at The Players Championship 2016, so that means he's going to be getting some significant TV time over the weekend.

You'll probably notice two things right away about Weekley:

1. He's lost some weight.
2. He's shaved off his beard.

Since the start of 2016, Weekley has been rocking a larger-than-life beard matched on the PGA Tour only by Canadian Graham DeLaet. It got so big and bushy that the Tour suggested Weekley might want to, you know, keep it a little more trimmed. Well, he got rid of the whole thing. However, that wasn't at the behest or the threat of the Tour. Rather, it was because it kept getting in the way of his fishing.

“I was down there fishing at my house or down at the beach fishing, throwing my catch net,” Weekley said after a second-round 3-under 69 at TPC Sawgrass. “And every time I threw it, the first time it snatched a bunch of my hairs out. I said, gosh darn, that kind of hurt.

“So I said, I’ll try it again and make sure I don’t put my chin down there on it. And I made it up and threw it again and it snatched a bunch more out. And I said, this is done with this. So I just walked back in from the pier, back in my condo, and I just took the clippers out and just shaved it all off.”

Ditching the facial hair may have knocked off a pound or two, but Weekley is down some 20 lbs overall -- thanks to a choice to cut out alcohol.

"No alcohol, but working out. We work out maybe once or twice a week, and then just kind of don’t eat as much as I normally do," he said. "Just cut back a little bit on eating. And it’s showed so far; I’ve lost 20 pounds.”
