The end of the 2016 Valspar Championship was the cutoff for the the WGC-Dell Match Play field. The top 64 in the Official World Golf Ranking published Sunday night after the finish of the tournament at the Innisbrook Resort automatically qualify for the event to be played at Austin Country Club in Texas.

For the second year in a row, the 64-player field is broken up into 16 groups of four players, in which a round-robin format determines the group winner which moves on to a 16-man, single-elimination bracket until a winner is crowned.

The top 16 players in the field were guaranteed to headline each group. Then, at a Monday night selection show on Golf Channel, players were picked through random draw to round out each group, with one player coming from the pool of those ranked 17th-32nd in the field, 33rd-48th and 49th-64th, respectively.
