The Associated Press reported Monday that Rickie Fowler and Rory McIlroy are likely to meet up in an 18-hole, under-the-lights match at Detroit Golf Club. The mortgage lender is headquartered in Detroit and already sponsors Fowler, the world No. 4 player. Fowler, who signed an endorsement deal with the company in 2015, also competes in the PGA Tour's Quicken Loans National under the deal.
McIlroy and Fowler routinely skip the PGA Tour's FedEx St. Jude Classic, the precursor to the second major of the year.
The U.S. Open will be played this year for the ninth time at Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh, Penn.
This would be the first significant primetime match broadcast on TV since the series of such matches involving Tiger Woods ended a seven-year stint in 2005.
