Ernie Els wasn't looking good to make the cut late in his second round on Friday at the Valspar Championship. So when his tee shot landed next to a tree at the par-4 16th at Innisbrook's Copperhead course, Els knew he had to find a way to make a tough par.
Instead of taking an unplayable lie that wouldn't have helped him too much, Els decided to try to attempt to hit his ball out from the trees and into the fairway for an outside chance at par. It didn't go well.
Els broke his club in two and the shaft made an incredibly loud clang noise as it split. The South African was OK, but went on to make a fate-sealing double-bogey 6.
